The geographical heart of Europe lies in Friuli Venezia Giulia, where the Alps are at their closest to the Adriatic Sea, the northernmost part of the Mediterranean Sea. Such closeness of mountain and sea accounts for quite a few features of this region.
The volume is divided into three sections, the first focuses on animal species and local vegetation, which is extremely rich, and on the jewels of Friuli Venezia Giulia, from the Fusine lakes, to the Friulian Dolomites and the Julian Prealps.
The second section of the book focuses on mountain cooking: originated from a blend of the great Central-European, Venetian and Slavonic traditions, simple local folk-food was made with the few ingredients available. Friulian mountain gastronomy has now become one of the most distinctive regional cuisines in Italy.
The third and last section describes a tradition of tales deeply rooted in the territory. Mountains always bear in themselves a landscape that goes beyond the visual landscape described in this book. It is made of words and stories.
