Sicily, ancient “crossroads of mediterranean and extra-mediterranean cultures and people”. The underwater archaeological treasure of Sicily is impressive for quantity and quality and includes dozens of wreckages

The importance of Sicily as ancient “crossroads of mediterranean and extra-mediterranean cultures and people” is confirmed by the great amount of archaeological finds re-emerging from the seabed around the main island and the minor ones. Entire vessels violated by the sea and by man, isolated traces of ancient navigations or  real ports allow to refer to stories of battles, commerce, migrations and expeditions, an incredibile amount of facts which became florid history in the difficult relationship that this land has had with the sea, and by means of it with the entire world.

The underwater archaeological treasure of Sicily is impressive for quantity and quality and includes dozens of wreckages and hundreds of isolated findings, some of them are of great importance and value, like the well-known statues of the “Reshef di Selinunte” and of the “Satiro di Mazara del Vallo”. Thanks to these recoveries from the past and the systematic researches conducted today it has been possible to reconstruct the fascinating history that connects indissolubly Sicily to its seas, important means of richness, history and culture.
